Wednesday was released two weeks ago on Netflix, ironically on a Wednesday. So, what are the best and worst things about the series? If you still haven’t watched it yet, then there will be spoilers, so turn back now.
Bad: Morticia and Wednesday’s Relationship
In season one, Wednesday and her mother have a rocky relationship to say the least. This was apparently to make Wednesday more relatable for the audience, but my question is why? The original series and films were so good because they portrayed a healthy family who loved each other. Wouldn’t this mean Wednesday and Morticia would have a good, healthy relationship with each other to go against the norm?
Good: Fashion Sense
The outfits were amazing. Tim Burton’s new series stays true to the outfits that the Addams Family is known for, yet still manages to give them a modern twist. I liked that Wednesday had a slightly different uniform to her peers because it helped to maintain the original Wednesday-esque style. This also helped her stand out in a crowd of other “outcasts”, rather than blending in, something that Wednesday Addams has never been good at, if you’d care to remember her time at summer camp.
Bad: The Love Interests
In the new series, Wednesday is portrayed with two potential love interests: Tyler and Xavier. Fans have also been shipping her with her roommate, Enid. However, Wednesday doesn’t seem like a person who would be particularly interested in anyone, let alone two conventionally attractive boys.
Good: Thing
Although Thing can’t talk, it is easily one of the funniest and best characters in the show. Victor Dorobantu who portrays Thing in the new series, did a great job at convincing the audience that Thing was full of emotion, despite it being just an ordinary hand behind the scenes. Dorabantu was able to give Thing a unique, sassy personality that quickly became a fan favourite.
Bad: Gomez and Morticia being alumni of Nevermore
Wednesday claimed that Gomez and Morticia are alumni of Nevermore and that is how they originally met. However, this is untrue. They met when Gomez was being set up with Morticia’s sister, Ophelia. Gomez wasn’t interested in Ophelia though and fell in love with Morticia at first sight. Gomez was betrothed to Ophelia but finally mustered up the courage to object to their marriage during the wedding. Ophelia didn’t mind because she had fallen for Cousin Itt.
Good: The Plot
Although I didn’t like that Gomez and Morticia were made alumni of Nevermore, I liked the concept of a school for people who don’t always fit in. Unlike some criticisms, I thought it made sense that werewolves, sirens and the like to exist in the Addams universe. The incorporation of the mystery kept me guessing until the very end when everything finally slipped into place, making me feel foolish for not guessing it earlier.
Overall, this was a very good series, and I can only hope any future seasons are just as good. Though I would like it if they would clear up Wednesday’s morals with the audience as it felt like they contradicted at times. For instance, how is Wednesday ok with using piranhas to almost kill some boys, but not when a hyde is set loose? Does there have to be a good reason behind it? Does Wednesday herself have a limit? It would have been nice to have it clarified for some of the more confused viewers. Though despite my criticisms, Wednesday has a lot of potential as a Netflix series, let’s just hope they don’t cancel it before its time.
